What is retrofit?

Retrofit means upgrading your home to use less energy and retain more warmth – helping you cut costs, reduce emissions and live more comfortably.

Home energy saving improvements (also called retrofit) refer to upgrade work that makes your home warmer, more efficient and less reliant on fossil fuels. This includes practical measures like insulation, draught-proofing, optimal heating systems and renewable energy technology.

Upgrades to improve your home and environment

Most UK homes weren’t built with energy efficiency in mind. Heat escapes through walls, roofs and windows, making homes harder to heat and more expensive to run. Energy efficiency improvements address this – boosting comfort, health and reducing bills all at once.

The benefits reach far beyond your home. When thousands of homes improve together, entire communities become more sustainable and resilient. With homes accounting for around 14% of the UK’s total greenhouse gas emissions, retrofit improvements also play a vital role in tackling the climate emergency. Making energy improvements to our homes at scale will help us meet our climate targets – and protect household budgets at the same time.

Futureproof’s retrofit approach

We recommend a ‘whole-house approach’. This means making changes systematically, considering how different measures work together and ventilation, and planning for your home’s future needs. It helps avoid problems later and ensures you get maximum benefit from every improvement. All of our home energy surveys follow this approach.

With Futureproof, you’ll get a personalised retrofit plan that considers how your home is built, how you use it, and what you want to achieve. Our advice is impartial, expert, and grounded in 45+ years of real-world experience.

Common retrofit improvements include:

insulation

Wall, loft or floor insulation

door

Energy efficient doors and windows

ventilation

Ventilation systems

lc_heating

Low carbon heating

solar

Solar panels and battery storage

draught

Draught-proofing

insulation

Wall, loft or floor insulation

Poorly insulated buildings can lose up to 78% of their heat through their walls, roof and floor. Installing insulation can be an effective way to slow the rate of heat loss to the outside, keeping your home warmer for longer.
door

Energy efficient doors and windows

Installing double glazing and high thermal performance doors will reduce heat loss, keep your home warmer and cut heating bills. Efficient glazing will also insulate against external noise.
ventilation

Ventilation systems

Ventilation helps to regulate internal moisture levels, preventing condensation and mould. It also improves indoor air quality by removing pollutants like cooking fumes and cleansing the air of particulate matter emitted by wood burners.
lc_heating

Low carbon heating

Electric powered heating systems such as heat pumps can be a low carbon and economical option for many homes. Since the UK now produces most of its electricity from low-carbon sources, a heat pump that works efficiently is likely to be the lowest carbon form of heating for your home.
solar

Solar panels and battery storage

The sun's energy can be converted into electricity using solar photovoltaic panels installed on your roof. Excess electricity generated can be stored in a domestic battery. This clean, renewable energy can power your home, save you money, and help to decarbonise grid-supplied electricity.
draught

Draught-proofing

Most houses, particularly old ones, have cracks and gaps through which warm air escapes and cold air comes in. This includes the gaps between or around floorboards; around windows and doors; through the letterbox; where pipework comes through external walls and floors; around the loft hatch; and around electrical fittings. Sealing these gaps will help keep the heat in.
