Draught and Ventilation Survey

Stop draughts and boost comfort with expert guidance. Our draught and ventilation survey pinpoints exactly where heat escapes and cold air enters your home. Perfect if you’re experiencing cold draughts or uneven temperatures and want quick, effective solutions. Our specialist draft and ventilation survey delivers:

  • Real-time draught detection showing you exactly where problems are.
  • Professional airtightness testing with industry-standard scoring.
  • Mechanical ventilation assessment to help prevent damp and mould.

If you’re tired of cold spots, high energy bills or wondering why some rooms never feel warm enough, our comprehensive survey provides the answers you need.

We don’t just tell you that your home is draughty – we use specialist equipment to show you exactly where the problem areas are. We also check the intentional ventilation of your home, such as extractor fans and cooker hoods, to make sure they’re removing moist air effectively to reduce the risk of damp and mould.

You’ll receive clear, actionable recommendations for quick fixes that deliver immediate comfort improvements whilst reducing energy bills.

Why choose Futureproof? As part of the Centre for Sustainable Energy, we bring over 45 years of energy advice experience to every survey. We’re a charity and our advice is completely impartial – we’ll never profit from the improvements we recommend.

Our systematic approach combines professional testing equipment with real-time detection, so you can see and feel the difference our recommendations will make, and we can give you precise improvement recommendations.

Your survey includes:

  • Real-time draught detection – we increase airflow through your home so you can feel exactly where draughts are entering; we use specialist detection tools, including thermal imaging cameras, when conditions are optimal.
  • Professional airtightness testing – an industry standard score to compare to other properties.
  • Mechanical ventilation testing – testing your ventilation systems to ensure there’s adequate extraction.

Our testing follows industry-standard methodologies, giving you reliable data to guide your improvements and track progress over time.

Your detailed survey report will provide an overview of draught locations with prioritised recommendations for fixing them. We’ll explain what your airtightness score means, advise on ventilation requirements to prevent damp and mould, and give you a clear action plan for immediate improvements.

Do you have a question? We might have already answered it in our FAQs below. If not, book a free consultation with one of our advisors.

If you want to improve the air tightness and insulation of your property, this survey will provide a baseline score for you to work from and show you where to fix draughts that let unwanted cold air in.

The ventilation test will tell you whether your current ventilation is helping to maintain a healthy home. It will help you to make your home more comfortable and cut energy bills and carbon emissions.

Futureproof operates across Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire. If you live in this area and want to make your home more comfortable, greener, or cheaper to run, we’d love to help.

For some surveys in certain areas, we might refer you to one of our partner organisations – Retrofit West or Bath and West Community Energy. This is because they provide similar surveys, often at a discount because they have utilised local funding. Often though, the surveyor conducting your survey will be from Futureproof. So, although you might book a survey through another organisation, you’ll receive the same quality and information that you need.

Retrofit West was launched in 2023 by the Centre for Sustainable Energy – the same charity behind Futureproof. It’s a one-stop shop offering independent advice and support for energy-efficient home improvements in the West of England. It coordinates local supply chains, facilitates training, and helps households plan, design, and deliver sustainable retrofit projects to achieve net zero and energy affordability. Visit their website for up-to-date information.

The survey takes approximately 2 hours, depending on the size of your home.

You will need to be able to turn off your boiler, or if you have an Aga (or similar) range cooker then you will need to turn this off too, 24 hours before the survey. This prevents fumes being drawn back into your home during testing.

We use the most effective detection method for conditions on the day – this might be thermal imaging cameras (particularly effective in colder months) or other specialist detection equipment. All our methods clearly show you exactly where draughts are occurring.

We will need access to all rooms in the property and ideally be able to open cupboards and service entrances to investigate draughts that may come through them. All intentional ventilation paths, such as vents, are also sealed for the test using easily removable tape.

Your report will be unique to your home and its features, but we have an example report you can read. Download an example report.
